Zendaya is Set to Star As Ronnie Spector in ‘Be My Baby’ Directed by Barry Jenkins

*Oscar-winning filmmaker Barry Jenkins has come on board for Zendaya’s film about the life of singer Ronnie Spector, “Be My Baby.”
Deadline reports Jenkins will direct the biopic, with Dave Kajganich recruited to write an original screenplay. “Be My Baby,” will star Zendaya as Spector, in what sources reveal is an agreed-on version of the songstress’ story between Zendaya and Jenkins.
One that offers an alternative to the traditional biopic format of chronicling an entertainer’s life from birth to death with highlighting what Ronnie Spector’s life with her troubled former husband, producer Phil Spector, felt like.
Deals for Spector’s life rights and for the “Be My Baby” memoir she wrote with Vince Waldron remain intact. The feature is in development with Kajganich who is hard at work on the expressive version of Spector’s life Zendaya and Jenkins are after.
Zendaya’s involvement in “Be My Baby” goes beyond her time in front of the camera. The “Dune: Part Two” fixture also had a hand in the hot rights sale along with Marc Platt and Adam Siegel. The trio will all produce the upcoming biopic with Mark Itkin and Tom Shelly.

Spector herself was a part “Be My Baby” prior to her death in 2022, serving as an executive producer and hand-selecting Zendaya to play her.
Jenkins’ inclusion on the “Be My Baby” team marks the “Moonlight” and “Mufasa: The Lion King” helmer’s latest collaboration with A24. The entertainment company is already on its third project with Zendaya with the Spector biopic, following their work on the Emmy-winning “Euphoria” and the upcoming film “The Drama,” co-starring Robert Pattinson.
