Directive 8020 Delayed to 2026, Supermassive Announces Layoffs

Supermassive Games has announced a delay for its sci-fi horror title Directive 8020. Instead of launching on October 2nd, it’s now coming in the first half of 2026, with the additional time used to “deliver the very best experience for our fans.”

The developer also announced layoffs, citing the “changing and ever-evolving environment” of the games industry. Up to 36 employees will be affected in the process, with the “absolute priority” being to provide “full support to those affected.” This is the second major round of layoffs for Supermassive, with about 90 employees reportedly let go last year.

Directive 8020 is in development for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. Players control members of the Cassiopeia, a colony ship venturing towards Tau Ceti f in search of a new home. Instead, they discover a hostile shapeshifting alien organism that can perfectly mimic the crew.

Much like The Thing, you have to question whom to trust, which can lead to pivotal choices and consequences. Unlike previous Supermassive Games titles, there’s a heavier emphasis on stealth and combat. Head here for more details on Turning Points, which allow you to return to key choices and unlock new narrative paths.
