Last week’s far-reaching restructuring of Xbox has rekindled an old debate. Some Internet users and other observers believe that Game Pass could be responsible for the recent woes of Microsoft’s gaming division.
Journalist Christopher Dring, from The Game Business, claims to have been contacted by sources on this very subject. The latter report that Xbox Game Pass is profitable, even taking into account losses linked to sales of the first-party games included in the service.
Dring had initially stated that Game Pass was profitable, but without including the costs of first-party games. Since they are included in the subscription, these Xbox-developed titles can generate low sales, resulting in more or less significant losses. But in the end, since these figures are taken into account, it would seem that Game Pass manages to generate enough revenue to offset these potential losses.
It’s important to note, however, that we have no precise figures on Game Pass profitability.
