Whoopi Goldberg had an interesting reaction to the new Superman movie — and she didn’t bat an eye telling stars David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan all about it during a live discussion on The View.
The EGOT winner revealed to the DC blockbuster’s leads that she initially developed a negative association with a key scene in the James Gunn–directed tentpole, until she probed further into why her gut told her to feel that way.
“When I was sitting and I was watching the first scene between the two of you, I’m thinking, ‘Okay, okay, this is alright,'” the 69-year-old actress said as the group sat at the Hot Topics table. “And progressively, I felt myself getting annoyed, and I couldn’t figure out what was happening.”

Corenswet watched intently as Goldberg elaborated.
The Ghost star continued, “What it was? I forgot what kindness looked like, and I kept waiting for Superman to become quippy, and he’s not that. He’s never been that. So, I fell in love with you as Superman.”
She noted that she was friends with OG Superman film actor Christopher Reev and that experiencing Corenswet’s approach to the character allowed her to “just kind of question myself” and her relationship to the emotions of the scene.
“Who have I become that I didn’t recognize the kindness? Why was I waiting for you to turn into somebody that [Superman has] never been?” Goldberg asked. “I know it sounds crazy, but it knocked me for a loop, because I thought, ‘Oh, that’s right, he’s nice, and he’s kind, and he’s different.'”
The conversation continued, with Goldberg doubling down about Corenswet presenting Superman in an alternative fashion.

“Thank you for saying that — that means so much,” the 32-year-old actor said to Goldberg after she finished her assessment.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Corenswet expanded on taking inspiration from Reeve for his role in the new movie.

“I’ve listened to Christopher Reeve talk about how he felt going from theater and a classical training to wearing tights on screen,” Corenswet said in EW’s June cover story. “It’s harder in some ways to play Superman and then to do a great play or a dramatic film, because as an actor, you feel like the seriousness of the work somehow supports you. It allows the whole thing to feel more grounded. There is a unique challenge to playing a guy who wears his underwear on the outside and can fly. I think I had the great fortune of getting a little bit of both. I was definitely on team trunks-on-the-outside for this iteration of Superman, but I certainly felt James took the work very seriously.”
The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. PT on ABC. Superman hits theaters Friday.
