It seems that nowadays the prop hunt genre is one that’s really becoming popular. Ever since it first arrived way back in the day the simple fun of finding out where someone is in a cluttered level, as they masquerade as pieces of the scenery, seems to be quite gripping. And the latest effort by developer gamesbynav is an attempt to capitalise on that with Where’s Potato? Out now on Android!
Visually speaking Where’s Potato? Is not necessarily that impressive. This is a straightforward 3D prop hunter where the player who takes the role of the potato must evade a team of seekers as they hide themselves away somewhere in a typical suburban home. The potato isn’t wholly defenceless though as by eating hot chili peppers it gains the ability to attack and burn seekers, do so to 3 of them and the potato wins.
Yes, it’s not exactly a world-beating design but for a solo project from a relatively new developer Where’s Potato? looks to be a pretty decent effort. I do however think that it might not be able to stand out for a few very crucial reasons.
Scouting for potatoes
The chief reason that Where’s Potato? might not stand out is because the prop hunt genre is one that’s primarily popular on social gaming platforms, like Minecraft, or as a sub-mode in other games. Sadly I don’t think it’s one that can stand on its own as a single download.
However, I do think that it’s a very respectable effort, and managing to create a functional multiplayer release is one thing that even some more experienced devs struggle with. So with that in mind, I think I’ll keep my eye on gamesbynav and see what he comes out with next.
