After casting a spell over moviegoers during the holidays and scooping up several Academy Award nominations, Wicked is ready to ride its broomstick into your living room.
Director Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical defied naysayers and critics by breaking breaking box office records and cultivating a whole new audience of Elphaba stans. (The viral press junket didn’t hurt, either.)
So, when will Wicked be available to stream? And where? Also, what do we know about its upcoming sequel, Wicked: For Good? Read on for those answers and more.
What is Wicked about?
Universal Pictures
Wicked is a feature adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked, which itself was adapted from Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel. A revisionist prequel to The Wizard of Oz (both L. Frank Baum’s books and the 1939 film), the story centers on the Wicked Witch of the West, an iconic villain who once wasn’t so wicked.
Here, the Wicked Witch, who we learn is named Elphaba, is played by Emmy-, Grammy-, and Tony-winning singer and actress Cynthia Erivo. An outcast due to her green skin and unwieldy magical powers, Elphaba makes an unlikely friend out of the peppy Galinda (Ariana Grande), though they both end up falling for the same man, Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey).
Elphaba’s dream is to work with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum), but her trip to see him in the Emerald City isn’t what she expected, setting the stage for her villainous turn. You’ll have to wait for that, though, as Wicked only contains the first half of the story.
“If The Wizard of Oz is about the magic of childhood and how we look back on it as an adult, then Wicked is about the adolescence in between: Making and losing friends, falling in love, and reckoning with the physical and mental traits that set you apart from those around you,” Entertainment Weekly‘s critic wrote in their review.
What do we know about Wicked Part 2?
Giles Keyte/Universal Pictures
Wicked Part 2 has officially been titled Wicked: For Good. Fans of the musical know that the tag references the musical’s penultimate duet.
Wicked: For Good will pick up where Wicked left off, further exploring the love triangle between Elphaba, Galinda (now simply Glinda), and Fiyero, all while Elphaba and Glinda find themselves on opposite sides of a political divide.
The sequel is slated for release on Nov. 21, 2025, nearly a year to the day of the first film’s debut.

“If Part 1 is about choices, Part 2 is about consequences,” Chu told EW. “Choices are difficult to make, but when you do make those choices, sometimes the result isn’t what you expect it to be. It can be lonely, it can be hard.”
He added, “There’s a lot of soul searching in movie 2. They’re asking, ‘Is this the right decision that you made?’ There’s a matureness and a nuance to it that we earn from the first movie. The second movie really gets to play with [that maturity].”
Of particular interest to Broadway stans will be the two new songs that Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz penned for the film. We don’t have many details about who sings them or what they’ll be about, but critics of the stage show’s second act may end up changing their tune.
When is Wicked streaming?

Wicked is currently available to rent or purchase via Amazon Prime, but Peacock subscribers will be able to stream it beginning on March 21.
How long is Wicked?

Wicked runs a whopping 2 hours and 40 minutes, which is roughly the length of the entire stage show. Of course, the film elaborates on several scenes and musical numbers, which contributes to the extra runtime.
