Barbra Streisand says she wasn’t paid as much as men for ‘Meet the Fockers’

Don’t rain on Barbra Streisand’s parade on payday.

The venerable singer and actress weighed in as to whether she would reprise her role as Roz Focker from Meet the Fockers in the new Meet the Parents film while discussing her new album with Variety, noting that she would need to be paid “a lot of money” for that to happen considering the pay disparity on the 2004 sequel.

“Oh my God. They’d have to pay me a lot of money because I didn’t get paid what the other people got paid and so I’m pissed off,” Streisand said. “I was in the time when women were getting paid less than the men. The head of Universal was Ron Meyer at the time, and he actually sent me a bonus check. It was very sweet.”

Streisand starred as Dustin Hoffman’s onscreen wife in the sequel, with both playing the parents of Ben Stiller’s Greg as they meet (and clash with) their son’s future in-laws (Robert De Niro and Blythe Danner), much to the dismay of Greg and his fiancée Pam (Teri Polo).

Universal recently announced a fourth Meet the Parents, a follow-up to the 2010 threequel Little Fockers that will feature the return of many of the original stars (sans Streisand) with one notable new addition: pop star Ariana Grande, fresh off her turn in Wicked, in an undisclosed role. John Hamburg, who co-wrote the first three films, once again penned the fourth entry and will also direct.

Grande is also slated to appear on a song, “One Heart, One Voice,” on Streisand’s upcoming album The Secret of Life: Partners, Volume Two, a collection of duets and companion to her 2014 album Partners. The track will also feature Mariah Carey.

“They’re the hottest, biggest, most wonderful voices,” Streisand told Variety of tapping the music superstars. “And they both said yes to join me.”

As for whether she would consider a return to the big screen, Streisand noted that she does “get a lot of offers” when asked how often serious acting offers came her way.

“But they’re funny offers,” said the star of such films as Funny Face and Yentl. “Well, one was good. It was something that Peter Bogdanovich was going to do and Guillermo del Toro sent it to me, I think. It’s a subject that I actually love, but I’m not going to tell you. I’m not ready to direct again. I think I’ve probably had it.”
