He may not have won The Voice, but that’s not keeping American Idol contestant Victor Solomon from giving a show-stopping performance.
Entertainment Weekly has an exclusive sneak peek at Sunday’s episode of the singing competition, which sees the contestants fight for their spots on stage in the Showstopper round. They’re also joined by Jelly Roll, the show’s first artist in residence, to help them on their journey.
The exclusive clip above shows Solomon preparing for his rendition of Phil Collins’ 1981 classic “In the Air Tonight.”
“I can relate to this song,” Solomon says ahead of taking the stage before judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood. “I’ve been waiting for this moment all my life.”
“There is truly nothing like performing in front of a live audience. When we’re onstage and I see the lights, I hear the sound of the fans, I hear the cheering of the crowd — everything stops,” he says.
Solomon’s energy onstage certainly seems like he’s been waiting for his time in the spotlight, and his performance even prompts Richie to get out of his chair and shout, “Come on, boy!”

It’s not Solomon’s first time on a reality competition series. The Voice viewers will remember Solomon as a member of John Legend’s team in season 20, where he sang songs including “Glory” by Common and Legend himself (gutsy!) and Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Solomon ended up finishing in fifth place, and has since moved from Chicago to Los Angeles in his pursuit of a career in music.

Solomon’s Idol audition, with Richie’s own “Hello” (gutsy again), left the judges wowed. “In my entire career,” Richie said, “I have never had anyone take ‘Hello’ and preach on ‘Hello.'”
That was a good thing! And the other judges agreed. Underwood, particularly, gave him “so many yesses.”
See Solomon’s full performance on a new episode of American Idol airing Sunday, April 6, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
