It’s bad news for Final Fantasy fans today, as one of the franchise’s many mobile releases is sadly getting the axe. War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius joins a long line of Square Enix mobile games that have faced shutdown in recent years. So if you want to get your final taste of the action in WOTV, you’ll need to jump in before it shuts down on May 29th this year.
War of the Visions, as stated above, adds to a long line of Square Enix mobile releases that have been shuttered over the past few years. Ironically, this spin-off title is also being shuttered after the original Brave Exvius announced its closure in September 2024.
To say nothing of whether or not War of the Visions was good, it seems that Square Enix has had a bit of a crisis of confidence recently when it comes to their mobile offerings. This is little surprise considering they still have quite a large catalogue for smartphones, including their ports of older retro releases.
Treading the overworld
So what’s going on with Square Enix and their glut of mobile axeings? Well, I think the easiest answer but the hardest to really explain is that they’ve simply oversaturated the market with a great many spin-offs. And at a time when the mega-popular Final Fantasy XIV is set to arrive on mobile, fans aren’t exactly hurting for ways to experience their favourite franchise on the go.
Still, it speaks to perhaps a bit of overconfidence, which sadly means that fans will suffer by losing what I’m sure at least some of you were enjoying.
