Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ Scores Perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes, Hailed as Year’s Best

*Ryan Coogler’s much-anticipated vampire horror film “Sinners” doesn’t hit theaters until April 18, but early press screenings have critics already calling it one of the best films of the year. With a flawless 100% Rotten Tomatoes score based on 37 reviews, the buzz is loud and glowing.
The film, set in the Jim Crow-era American South of the 1930s, follows the journey of twin brothers (both played by Michael B. Jordan) who try to leave their troubled lives behind and return to their hometown for a fresh start, only to find an even greater evil waiting to welcome them back. Joining him are Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, and Wunmi Mosaku, with an original score by longtime Coogler collaborator Ludwig Göransson.
As GamesRadar reports, critics are calling “Sinners” a genre-defying masterpiece. BJ Colangelo of Fangoria declared, “Sinners is currently Coogler’s magnum opus… This isn’t only one of the best horror films of the year, it’s one of the best films, period.” Linda Marric from HeyUGuys praised it as “a film of breathtaking audacity.”
The film marks a major shift for Coogler, best known for his work on “Black Panther” and “Creed.” Karl Delossantos of Smash Cut Reviews calls it “One of the most devilishly entertaining movies of the year.” Eric Goldman of IGN Movie wrote, “Ryan Coogler enters the horror realm and nails it in Sinners,” while Andrew J. Salazar from Discussing Film called it “Coogler’s most audacious work yet, creating a fresh spin on vampire horror stories.”
Tessa Smith of Mama’s Geeky dubbed it “a masterclass in filmmaking.” Other reviewers echoed the praise. Matt Neglia (Next Best Picture) called it “one of the best films of the year,” and Matt Singer (ScreenCrush) said it’s “the best movie I’ve seen in 2025 so far.” Emmanuel Noisette (The Movie Blog) highlighted the film’s deeper layers, saying, “What sets Sinners apart is its thematic depth. The film’s exploration of duality is masterfully layered.”
In a sea of sequels and reboots, “Sinners” stands out as a bold, original studio film. As Jeremy Mathai of Slashfilm put it: “We simply don’t get original blockbusters with this level of passion and on this scale anymore, at least outside of a Christopher Nolan or M. Night Shyamalan production.”
“Sinners” is emerging not only as a standout in horror but as one of 2025’s most defining films. It’s currently the highest-rated movie of the year, and the only film this year shot on IMAX film cameras. Watch Coogler explain the magic behind making the movie in the X video below.
