‘Wonder Woman’ movie ‘a priority’ but not fast-tracked, James Gunn clarifies

James Gunn, the co-head of DC Studios with Peter Safran, is once again clearing up some confusion around an upcoming project.

Gunn, also the writer and director of the new Superman movie, previously broke the news to Entertainment Weekly that a Wonder Woman movie was in development, saying it’s “being written right now.”

With Superman now surpassing $300 million at the global box office, Variety published a report on the status of the DC franchise. According to the trade’s sourcing, Wonder Woman is now being fast-tracked.

Responding to fan inquiries on social media platform Threads, Gunn clarified the situation. “It’s a priority, but I wouldn’t call that fast-tracked,” the filmmaker and studio head honcho wrote Friday. “Nothing is going to be shot unless we’re as sure as we can be that the script is good.”

Gunn also confirmed there’s no truth to any online rumors that DC Studios is currently casting for the role of the Amazon warrior from Themyscira. To that, he simply wrote, “Nope.” However, he went into greater detail regarding claims that the studio is “seeking an actress with a TV-centric résumé,” like Milly Alcock, who broke out on HBO’s House of the Dragon season 1 before landing the Supergirl role.

“I’d never in a million years look for a major role based on whether they did TV, films, or whatever,” Gunn replied. “It’s all about the casting. I didn’t cast Milly because of her past, but because she was the best one for the role. (But we’re also not casting WW, nor even discussing it, until a script is finished).”

Starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Kal-El, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Superman opened last weekend on July 11 and super-charged the new DC universe Gunn and his team are launching. In a recent chat with EW, Gunn confirmed that there are direct ties to Peacemaker season 2, the next DCU project, which is set to arrive on HBO Max on Aug. 21.

Supergirl, starring Alcock, will then arrive in theaters on June 26, 2026. Though they don’t have premiere dates yet, Lanterns, the Green Lantern HBO Max drama starring Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, is finishing up filming, while the Clayface body-horror movie, starring Tom Rhys Harries, plans to shoot this year.

A number of other projects, some already announced in some form, are in the works, including Wonder Woman and a Batman movie.

During a previous interview with EW, Gunn confirmed past comments made to Warner Bros. leadership that the characters of Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman are crucial to the franchise. “I wouldn’t say only those four characters,” he said, “but I would say that those four characters are incredibly important to us. Right now, I feel great about where two of those characters are, and then we’re dealing with the other two.”
