‘The View’ cohost slams Joe Biden 1 day before his talk show interview

  • Biden is set to appear on The View Thursday for his first live interview on the show since leaving office.

The View cohost Alyssa Farah Griffin gave a pointed public welcome to President Joe Biden one day before the politician was set to join the show for his first interview on it since leaving office.

The conservative commentator, who has long analyzed American politics from her media platform, appeared Wednesday on CNN to discuss Biden’s recent discussion with BBC regarding his take on Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s handling of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as well as Donald Trump’s divisive rhetoric.

After fellow guest S.E. Cupp called Biden an “irrelevant” figure in the Democratic party, CNN host John Berman segued into a question for Griffin — a former White House staffer who previously resigned from Trump’s first-term administration — by noting that Biden is “going to pop up tomorrow on The View” before asking, “How do voters feel about this message, that this is all chaos?”

Griffin chuckled before speculating that she and Cupp were “getting similar texts this morning from Democratic operatives, because this is the messenger no Democrat wants to see out there right now.”

She added that Biden “has a mixed legacy on a number of factors” and that he “deserves tremendous credit for holding the NATO alliance together in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine,” before criticizing his handling of what she called the “disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan.”

“People are ready to move on, with due respect to the former president. And most former presidents give their legacy some time to breathe,” Griffin said. “I think of Jimmy Carter. When he lost, he didn’t go out there and do a lot of interviews. He gave his legacy some time. A decade later, he was one of the most beloved former presidents. If I were giving advice to Joe Biden, it would be to give your legacy some time to breathe.”

Berman jumped in to say, “I’m sure you say that excited about the booking you have on The View tomorrow,” to which Griffin replied with a laugh. “But thank you for coming on!”

Before Griffin’s assessment, Cupp also criticized Biden’s standing with his party after a tumultuous election cycle that saw immense pressure for him to bow out of the race — which he eventually did in the summer of 2024 before endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris, who ultimately lost the November election to Trump, to succeed him on the ticket.

“Democratic voters are over him, Democratic lawmakers are angry at him, and Democratic donors are over him — they’re past him, they’re done with him,” Cupp said. “They don’t want him around. And, just practically, it’s a very bad time for Joe Biden to pop up. Voters are just now starting to blame the economy on Donald Trump and less on Joe Biden. For him to pop up and remind people of the bad old days, it’s bad timing.”

Entertainment Weekly has reached out to representatives for Biden and The View for comment.

Prior to Thursday’s live interview, Griffin has spoken about Biden’s legacy on The View‘s companion podcast, Behind the Table, echoing her long-standing criticism of Democratic strategy that she also voiced in the aftermath of the 2024 election.

Biden has appeared on The View before, including in September 2024, when moderator Whoopi Goldberg told him that she “didn’t like” the way Democrats publicly called for him to step down.

“Listen, I didn’t like the way they did it,” she told Biden. “I’m just going to say it out loud because nobody says it out loud. I didn’t like the way it was done publicly, I thought they could’ve done this in a different way. We didn’t need to hear all the inner fighting. I didn’t like it. I’m saying it to you, you were my ride-or-die,” Goldberg told Biden. “I was going wherever you were going, that’s where I was going. I just wanted to say that because I always felt you were going to probably do four years and then try to figure out where to go with Kamala [Harris].”
