The Open 2025 LIVE RESULTS: Leaderboard latest with Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick aiming to catch Scottie Scheffler

‘Not over yet’

That is the verdict of our SunSport golf expert David Facey…

This Open is not over yet, even though Scottie Scheffler has one hand on the Claret Jug after easing his way into a four-shot lead through 54 holes.

World No1 Scheffler’s third-round 67 took him well clear of Li Haotong, a player ranked 110 places below him.

But it is the man lurking in a share of fourth place, world No2 Rory McIlroy, who will have Scheffler looking over his shoulder when the final round tees off – especially if McIlroy can repeat his Saturday Special of making three birdies in the first four holes.

Quite simply, McIlroy has nothing to lose.

With a six-shot gap to close, he will throw the kitchen sink at Scheffler, along with the taps and all the other fittings.

Scheffler is the best player in the game.

McIlroy is the most dangerous.

His third-round 66 continued a rollercoaster ride, and there could be more spills and thrills to come.

It is a pity the best two players on the planet will not go head to head in the final group.

But with all due respect to the rest, it could still become a virtual matchplay scenario.
