The Joy Set Before Us – Endure and Finish Your Race!
Runners at the finish line – the race of endurance

*There’s an old saying: “If a task is once begun never leave it ‘til it’s done. Be the labor great or small do it well or not at all.”

Whether we make a personal commitment to ourselves or to others, it becomes an empty promise if not fulfilled. It’s like promising to write someone a letter, or calling them to keep in touch; if we write the letter but never mail it; or think of someone but never make the call; that’s an unfulfilled task.

On a greater scale, Colossians 3:23-24 says “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

Little things matter. Remember the saying “take care of the pennies, and the dollars (or pounds) will take care of themselves?” In all that we do, whether great or small, we should do our part.

In our communities, if we see trash on the ground and there’s a receptacle nearby, why not pick it up (if feasible) and toss it? If we’re out shopping and a shopping cart is not where it should be, push it to the nearest return rack in your pathway. While doing small things like this, imagine that someone is watching and learning from your example. Likewise, if you’re doing something good that nobody sees, just know that God sees, and is pleased.

A marathon runner practices to build up endurance for the big race, not necessarily thinking of winning – everyone can’t be the winner – but thinking more of finishing. There’s a certain confidence and inner peace that comes with crossing the finish line.

Just like the joy and confidence that follows after enduring and completing a difficult job assignment at work to help save the company from bankruptcy. What a reward when the boss acknowledges, praises, and perhaps promotes us for a job well done.

That’s what Jesus did on the cross. He was sent by God to be the Redeemer of fallen mankind. He knew the task before Him would be great and even prayed that there may be another way, but He was obedient to endure the cross in order to bring salvation to those who would believe and confess His death, burial, and resurrection.

“For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” [Hebrews 12:2]

What challenges are we facing today? What sacrifices must we endure to effectively run this race? What is the joy set before us that moves and beckons us to cross the finish line? Pray and consult God that we may do our best, and by faith be assured that God will do the rest.
