*Fans of the mischievous Mogwai have reason to celebrate, “Gremlins 3” is closer than ever.
As Inside the Magic reports, during a Q&A at Manchester Comic-Con, original star Zach Galligan gave an update, revealing that Warner Bros. now has a completed script for the third film in the franchise.
“I am happy to report that, after 35 years, they have come up with a script,” Galligan announced. “Warner Bros. is incredibly interested in doing it. Apparently, it’s waiting upon Mr. [Steven] Spielberg to read it and approve it. But you can thank the success of Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.”
Galligan cited Warner Bros.’ recent success with reviving dormant IPs as a key factor in “Gremlins 3” gaining momentum. Pointing to Sony’s “Ghostbusters” revival and WB’s massive box office returns from “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice,” he explained how studios are beginning to embrace nostalgia with confidence.
“Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice is a very interesting test case if you’re a studio executive at Warner Bros.,” Galligan noted. “They bring back Tim Burton, three key actors, throw in Jenna Ortega—boom.”
The actor also hinted at his potential return as Billy Peltzer, stating, “I can’t really think of a way they can’t use me. I think they kind of have to use me.”
He joked, “My bank account would love to do it,” before suggesting his character could appear mid-film in a crucial role.
Galligan also responded to fan speculation about Jenna Ortega possibly joining the cast. The star of Netflix’s “Wednesday” expressed interest in being part of the next “Gremlins” installment.
“We’re super excited about Amblin developing with Chris Columbus new entries in the Gremlins and Goonies franchises,” Warner Bros.’ co-chairman/CEOs Mike De Luca & Pam Abdy told Deadline.
While no official cast or release date has been announced, Chris Columbus is attached as the screenwriter. Details about the film’s plot and tone are under wraps.
