The director of Sea of Thieves and Banjo-Kazooie leaves Rare after 35 years

Microsoft has finally decided to cancel Everwild, the new license developed by Rare that was announced in 2019. The termination of the project has led to redundancies and the departure of a truly emblematic figure from the studio.

Video Games Chronicle reports that Gregg Mayles, a highly influential game designer at the British studio, is leaving after 35 years of loyal service. He was notably involved in the making of Banjo-Kazooie and Sea of Thieves. His departure is directly linked to the cancellation of Everwild.

In addition, executive producer Louise O’Connor, who joined the studio to work on Conker’s Bad Fur Day for the Nintendo 64, is also leaving.
