Gear up to fend off fearsome foes

The Toxic Ant Hill, where the Gloom Skewer is located, has its name for a reason. Cans of insecticide are littered throughout, with the residual liquid making some areas of the winding caverns particularly hazardous. Prepping your hotbars with restoratives can help with the road ahead. Here’s what you’ll want to bring to the party:

    • Bandages.
    • Sticky Mintito smoothies.
    • Heavy armor for a Cockroach fight.
    • Torches.

Find the Toxic Ant Hill

To snag the Gloom Skewer for yourself, you first need to make your way to where it’s located—the Toxic Ant Hill. Follow these pointers:

  • The Toxic Ant Hill has a north and south entrance.
  • For the south entrance, head directly north from the Hatchery Ant Hill South Entrance near Ranger Outpost Snackbar.
  • Alternatively, walk south from the southern corner of the Picnic Table for the South entrance, or North (under the tablecloth) for the north entrance.
  • Look for the can of bug spray sticking out of the earth.

Head into the hive

The Toxic Ant Hill isn’t particularly dangerous. Nor is it too long. Being an Ant Hill, you can ride your Red Soldier Ant buggy through to avoid aggroing the ants. You can use the Recruit command to have some of them join the quest for this elusive new weapon.

Inside, follow the short path until it forks. Take the left road all the way down until you spot a can of bug spray. Take a hard right further down the tunnel, and you’ll soon run into a cockroach. Continue down the path, avoiding the bubbling poison on either flank. Hop up the ledge where the Raw Science is and start your prep: the Gloom Skewers are in the chamber to your left.

Grab the Gloom Skewer

As you head into the Gloom Skewer location, be mindful of the Cockroach Queen. Though passive, she might pick a fight if something nudges her. If not, head to the end of the chamber and use your Grade II tool to chop the Mushrooms. Grab the Gloom Skewer from inside the chamber and be on your way.

With that, you’ll have your Gloom Skewer. This is a Grade II stabbing weapon. It’s lacking in the Stun and Crit department compared to the Mosquito Needle, but for a freebie, the Gaping Wound skill can give it a great damage boost, especially if your pals play with similar weapons.

How to beat the Cockroach Queen in the Toxic Ant Hill

Like a standard Cockroach, the Queen Cockroach is technically a neutral enemy. She’s unlikely to pick a fight while you swoop in for the Gloom Skewers. If you do something to tick her off (or just want the challenge), here are some things to note:

The Cockroach Queen has no weaknesses and resists Gas, Venom, Fresh, and Spicy. If you haven’t experimented with too many elemental surprises, you’ll almost be better for it.

The Cockroach Queen is enormous. This makes dueling in her poison-covered arena a little tricky. She uses her front legs to bat away anyone on her flank, potentially knocking them into the poison. She’ll also spew acid regularly, reducing the safe area even further, and attack with a slow and heavy body slam for area damage. It’s easy to Quick Dodge or block this one, but just be careful.

Lastly, depleting her health bar isn’t the end of the fight. Once her head pops off, she’ll regain around 33% HP, move faster, and attack almost exclusively with Sizzling Acid at a much higher rate. You also won’t be able to knock her out like this, making heavy weapons less effective. At least you’ll get her head.
