*Stockton’s city leadership is scrutinizing the use of $50,000 from its risk mitigation fund for a May 24 “Wild ‘N Out” event at Adventist Health Arena.

Interim City Manager Steve Colangelo revealed the funds were spent without his approval, prompting an investigation into the authorization process and potential policy violations, KCRA reports. “This investigation will determine how these funds were authorized, who was involved, and whether any City policies or procedures were bypassed,” stated a city news release, noting concerns about a councilmember’s role in the event’s planning.

Vice Mayor Jason Lee, who performed at the comedy show, addressed allegations of improper influence. “A few weeks ago, I got tipped off that there was a conspiracy brewing—claims that I ‘brought Wild ’N Out to Stockton’ and influenced decisions so Nick Cannon, my friends, and I could profit,” Lee posted on Facebook, defending the event as a favor to boost Stockton’s profile.

Tina McCarty, Stockton’s Economic Development Director, approved the funds, citing potential future partnerships with promoters.

“Once confirmed, I am willing to approve up to $50K out of Mitigation fund due to the Arena’s calendar year loss of shows,” McCarty wrote to Jason Perry, general manager of ASM Global Stockton.

Despite a reported $170,000 loss for promoters, the event drew 7,700 attendees, generating $25,000 in parking revenue. McCarty noted the risk mitigation fund, with a $600,000 budget, had previously covered $125,000 for another event.

Perry emphasized the event’s economic benefits, stating, “The key is that the show played off successfully leaving a positive impact on the community at large.”

Lee, denying direct involvement in fund approvals, called for a state investigation, arguing no policy mandated city manager authorization. He wrote: “To my haters, if you can’t outwork me in policy, opportunity, or inspiration, work harder. Because making up lies to do reputational harm won’t work when I’ve got the heart of the people.”
