See past hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal’s sweet Oscars reunion

The Oscars is all about bringing together Hollywood’s best and brightest — which means the night can’t end without a few heartfelt reunions.

Old pals Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal definitely delivered. During the 97th Academy Awards, the duo commemorated their decades-long friendship with a photo — a reunion made all the more meaningful by the venue.

Goldberg and Crystal have both stood where Conan O’Brien did last night and took a whirl at hosting from the Academy Awards stage. Crystal hosted the show nine times throughout the ’90s and 2000s, after first taking the stage at the 62nd Academy Awards in 1990 (his last stint was at the 84th ceremony in 2012). Meanwhile, Goldberg made history as the first Black woman to emcee the show solo at the 66th ceremony in 1994.

In fact, while walking the red carpet, Goldberg recalled that it was actually Crystal who called to offer her the gig. “Billy Crystal called and said, ‘Would you do this?’ and I was like, “I thought you were doing it,'” she told Variety. “And he said, ‘Well I can’t do this one.’ I was like, ‘Okay, I can do it.'”

Beyond the shared credit, Goldberg and Crystal go way back. Alongside their friend, the late Robin Williams, they teamed up to host the Comic Relief charity event throughout the 1980s and 1990s, using comedy to raise awareness for famine and poverty. The organization — founded by Richard Curtis and Sir Lenny Henry —  has thus far raised $436 million for the cause, according to its website.

Late last year, Goldberg and Crystal looked back on the collaboration during an episode of The View. At one point, Goldberg looked to Crystal with tears in her eyes, after acknowledging their missing friend, “Our brother, Robin.”

Referencing Williams’ death at 63 in 2014, Crystal said, “We’ve been through so much together, that when you came out and put your arm out like we did after he left us, that just made it all just so personal, you know? He was on my mind from the time we got to Washington, because of all of our memories there, the first time we went for Comic Relief back in ’86, it was very special stuff.”
