*Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) was caught off guard by a prank call from Nephew Tommy of the Steve Harvey Morning Show, who posed as “Terrance,” the fictional president of an organization called Our Black Businesses (OBB).
Tommy claimed that the organization had been denied a $2 million grant due to Crockett’s outspoken public persona. However, Crockett remained calm and offered her assistance, but also managed to take the joke in stride, proving that even in the chaos of politics, she can dish out a clapback just as well as she can take a prank.
“How did you get my number?” Crockett immediately questioned the prankster, her skepticism kicking in. Nephew Tommy responded that he got it from civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, whom Crockett affectionately refers to as her “brother.”
As the call unfolded, Nephew Tommy claimed that his organization had been denied a $2 million grant, supposedly due to Crockett’s viral, yet oftentimes embarrassing and unprofessional TV clapbacks. “The problem is we was denied that, and they saying they denied us for some stupid sh*t that you said on TV,” he alleged.
Attempting to calm the heated exchange, Crockett held her ground. “It ain’t got nothing to do with me,” she asserted, but still offered her assistance. “I would love to bring you and your organization into the fold, but… I gotta go… You can call my office, and my staff can help you.”
Nephew Tommy, still in character, pushed further, suggesting she remain silent for the next four years to avoid any further funding mishaps. Crockett, however, wasn’t backing down.
“If you’ve seen me, I know how to pop off, and I don’t want to pop off because I understand your frustration,” she shot back, trying to steer the conversation toward a solution.
“You’re talking about losing $2 million. So I get it. I would rather be productive and figure out how we can get that money back for you. I know people at Dallas Morning News, and so hopefully… I can assist you with that, but I can assure you that money doesn’t have anything to do with me and anything that I’ve said,” Crockett stated.
“As a public servant, I am really trying to serve the people. So just tell me how it is that I can help you instead of fighting with me.”
After several minutes of back-and-forth, the radio host finally revealed the truth: “This is Nephew Tommy, and you’ve been pranked.”
“What?! Do you know how crazy my life is, and you out here playing on my phone?” Crockett exclaimed. “Like seriously? I got people coming left and right complaining about everything under the sun, and you out here playing my phone.”
