Skilla Baby Shot Near 8 Mile in Targeted Attack

*Yesterday (05-22-15), Detroit rapper Skilla Baby, born Trevon Gardner, was injured in a drive-by shooting in Redford Township near 8 Mile and Beech Daly, reports the Detroit News. A dark-colored SUV pulled up alongside his vehicle and unleashed over 20 rounds. He was struck three times—grazes to the head and back, and a wound to either the leg or hand, depending on the report. After being shot, Skilla Baby crashed his own SUV into a nearby building. He was alert when first responders arrived and is expected to make a full recovery, according to officials.

Redford Township police, led by Detective Edward French, believe the attack was targeted. No arrests have been made and the motive remains unclear. Surveillance footage and eyewitnesses are helping with the investigation, but officials are asking for the public’s help in identifying the shooter or the vehicle used in the ambush.

Detroit City Officials and Fans Show Support

Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield released a statement shortly after the shooting, condemning the violence and praising Skilla Baby’s community efforts.

“Earlier today, Trevon ‘Skilla Baby’ Gardner was the victim of a drive-by shooting. By the grace of God, he has survived this attempt to take his life and is recovering in a local hospital. As a city, we will not tolerate the wanton disregard of life and the law and we will bring those responsible to justice.”
