Prince’s ‘Sign O’ The Times’ Concert Film Returns for Limited IMAX Screenings

*Prince’s “Sign O’ The Times” concert film is returning to theaters in a pleasing way for sight and sound.

Billboard reports the late music icon’s beloved companion movie to his classic album of the same name will screen globally for the first time in IMAX theaters for one week only starting Aug. 29. The announcement of the special showing was made July 22 via IMAX, Mercury Studios and FilmRise.

Directed, scored by and starring Prince, “Sign O’ The Times” was initially released on Nov. 20, 1987. The PG-13 film captures the Grammy-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Famer live on stage performing songs from the “Sign O’ Times” album’ with his new backing band after he fired his longtime group the Revolution before the album’s release.

Despite critical acclaim, the film ultimately bombed at the box office but found new life and popularity on home video.

“Sign O’ The Times,” Prince’s ninth studio album, featured hits such as the Hot 100-charting title track (#3), “U Got The Look (featuring Sheena Easton (#2), “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man” (#10) and “If I Was Your Girlfriend” (#67).

In addition to these hits, the film includes a mash-up of “Little Red Corvette” and the LP’s “Housequake,” as well as “Play in the Sunshine,” “Slow Love,” “Hot Thing,” “Forever in My Life,” “It’s Gonna Be a Beautiful Night” and “The Cross,” and a band cover of Charlie Parker’s “Now’s the Time.”

Easton appears in the “Sign O’ The Times” film along with Prince’s close musical confidants, percussionist Sheila E. and former Revolution members Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman, keyboardist Dr. Fink and drummer Bobby Z.

Regarding the IMAX run of the feature, a mix of its live footage and scripted scenes has been spruced up , with a release promising that, “enhanced with IMAX’s precision surround sound audio, customized theatre geometry, and crystal-clear images, Prince’s virtuoso performance is set to mesmerize fans old and new in the most epic format available.”

Although IMAX will distribute the “Sign O’ The Times” movie in the U.S., it’s worldwide distribution to other territories will be handled by Pathé. Fans can look forward to information coming on private screenings and other invite-only events in New York, Los Angeles, and Minneapolis in August.
