*The explosive Season 4 finale of “Raising Kanan” left fans reeling with shocking twists, long-awaited reveals, and a power shift that has been four seasons in the making. In a candid interview with EURweb, Patina Miller (Raquel Thomas) and series showrunner Sasha Penn opened up about the finale’s jaw-dropping moments and what fans can expect as the Thomas family’s empire faces its most dangerous threat yet.

For four seasons, Raquel “Raq” Thomas has been the unyielding queenpin of the Thomas family, reigning with equal parts love and lethal precision. But in the Season 4 finale, her iron grip was put to the ultimate test. Kanan Stark, her son and protégé, finally stepped out of her shadow dramatically, holding Raq at gunpoint. Sasha Penn shared insight into that pivotal moment, explaining,

“We always felt like, by the end of the series, you sort of have to see some version of Kanan that resembles who he was in “Power.” Each season has been an incremental step in that direction, and it felt like the story had brought us here naturally. This was Kanan coming of age and finally seeing his mother with clearer eyes—or at least he thinks he has clearer eyes.”

That shift isn’t just a shock to fans—it was an emotional experience for Miller, who’s portrayed Raq’s complex layers of strength and vulnerability since the show’s inception.

“When I saw the script, I knew it was going to be something like this,” Miller shared. “Raq has done some terrible things, but this season, she’s actually kind of innocent. She didn’t do everything people are putting on her. So that final scene… it broke my heart.”

As the Thomas family prepares for war with Unique, fractures in their empire become more evident. Irwin Hong and Stefano severed ties with Raq, while Marvin ended Early Tyler’s reign permanently.

The decision to reveal Breeze, portrayed by Shameik Moore, was snuck in there, one that Penn says was calculated.

“The character of Breeze has existed in everyone’s minds for years, and we knew the real version had to live up to that legend. It’s a character that exists in legend at this point, and stepping into the shoes of a legend always comes with controversy.”

He also revealed that the interpretation of Breeze is very close to what Power creator Courtney Kemp envisioned. “I talked to (series creator) Courtney Kemp extensively about it, and this version of Breeze feels very close to what she imagined. We wanted to make sure we captured that essence because it’s such an iconic character in this universe,” Penn shared. “The idea was always to honor what was built while still adding layers that make sense for Raising Kanan.”

Penn also revealed that the interpretation of Breeze is very close to what “Power” creator Courtney Kemp envisioned.

When asked about what fans can expect in the upcoming fifth and final season, Penn hinted at deeper family conflicts and the struggle to realign their fractured bonds. “Families are what they are; the dynamic is kind of baked in. I think what you’ll see in Season 5 is this family trying to reimagine itself. But there’s so much water under the bridge. Can they do that? Can they change? That’s the question we want fans to wrestle with,” Penn teased.

With Kanan’s transformation from reluctant son to a force of his own, and Breeze stepping into the fold, Season 5 is primed to be the final act that redefines the Power universe. And introduces us to young Ghost and Tommy, setting up the “Origins” show.

The stage is set, the players are armed, and the stakes have never been higher. “Raising Kanan” isn’t just setting the stage for a grand finale—it’s rewriting the game.
