Onimusha: Way of the Sword won't be open-world or even soulslike

Some developers don’t want to take risks and follow market trends. But that’s not the case for everyone in the industry, as Capcom will be doing things its own way with Onimusha: Way of the Sword.

In an interview with GameSpot, the game’s director, Satoru Nihei, clarified certain aspects of this new entry.

"Onimusha: Way of The Sword isn’t an open-world game, and it certainly isn’t a punishing die-and-retry (souls-like) game either."

"While there’s no doubt seasoned action-game players will be able to enjoy it, our goal was to make a game which gamers who don’t consider action games their forte will also have fun playing. In Way of The Sword, our main focus was to express the clashing of blades through the action."

The developers brought in new mechanics to ensure that swordfighting would be as realistic as possible. It’s also important to note that this entry’s story has nothing to do with the previous games.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword will be released in 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
