Former Xbox executive says he encouraged console wars back in the day

Former Xbox executive Peter Moore believes that the rivalry between PlayStation and Xbox was beneficial to the video game industry. In an interview on Danny Peña’s YouTube channel, he explains that this competition helped put video games on the map as a legitimate medium, whereas the mainstream press attributed negative effects to them.

Moore, who played a key role in Xbox’s strategy between 2003 and 2007, recalls the striking communications campaigns of the time, such as his tattoos revealing release dates. He says this approach was necessary to draw attention to the brand and stimulate the industry. Today, he sees a change. According to him, Microsoft is no longer looking to maintain this rivalry and is focusing more on services and content.

He believes that the acquisition of Activision Blizzard marks a new era, where the console wars are less relevant than before. However, he regrets a certain loss of dynamism in the sector, which he believes was built on this competition.
