NVIDIA's H20 IA GPU has been threatened with a ban in China

NVIDIA’s H20 GPU, designed for artificial intelligence, could be banned from sale in China. This time, it’s not American restrictions that are at issue, but a new Chinese regulation linked to energy efficiency.

According to the Financial Times, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) is considering imposing new rules aimed at limiting the use of certain chips in data centers. The aim would be to reduce dependence on NVIDIA products in favor of local solutions.

This measure could have a major impact on the company’s revenues, as China accounts for a significant share of AI sales, estimated at around $20 billion a year. To stay on the market, NVIDIA could adjust the performance of its H20 to comply with the new standards, but this would risk favoring its competitors.

Huawei, considered the main local rival, is preparing the release of its Ascend 910C chip, presented as equivalent to NVIDIA’s H100.
