Learner driver killed, passenger critical after horror crash near Cessnock

A teenage learner driver has been killed and his 17-year-old passenger airlifted to Sydney in a critical condition following a two-vehicle accident in the Hunter on Tuesday night.

Emergency services were called to John Renshaw Drive, Black Hill at about 9pm on Tuesday following reports of a crash. Police arrived to find a Holden Commodore and a Ford utility had collided.

The 17-year-old driver of the Holden died at the scene, while his rear passenger was treated before being airlifted to Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital.

The 56-year-old male front passenger was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition, while the driver of the Ford — a 62-year-old woman — was treated for minor injuries and taken to the same hospital for mandatory testing.

A report will be prepared for the coroner and anyone with further information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
