*Lionsgate and Universal’s Michael Jackson biopic, “Michael,” is now slated for a global theatrical release on April 24, 2026. This marks the third delay for the film, originally scheduled for April 18, 2025, then moved to October 3, 2025, Deadline reports.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the movie stars Jaafar Jackson, the late singer’s nephew, as the iconic pop star. The film’s production has faced significant hurdles, including a lengthy initial cut exceeding three and a half hours. Additionally, legal issues arose from a 1993 settlement with Jordan Chandler, who accused Jackson of molestation at age 13.
The settlement, reportedly $25 million, included a clause prohibiting depiction of the Chandlers in any film. Despite initial script approval by Jackson’s estate, this clause was overlooked, necessitating reshoots to remove Chandler references.
“The Michael Jackson biopic is not in total chaos. The inflammatory headlines about the moving halting are simply not true,” a source close to the production tells PEOPLE. Reshoots were scheduled for March to address these issues, with the film moving forward under producer Graham King’s GK Films. The company announced in May 2024 that principal photography had wrapped.
The biopic aims to explore the pop legend’s life, capturing “triumphs and tragedies on an epic, cinematic scale — from his human side and personal struggles to his undeniable creative genius, captured by his most iconic performances.”
The cast includes Colman Domingo and Nia Long as Jackson’s parents, Joe and Katherine, adding depth to the portrayal of his personal life. Written by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan, “Michael” seeks to balance Jackson’s musical legacy with his complex personal story.
The production’s adjustments reflect efforts to navigate sensitive legal and narrative challenges while honoring the artist’s impact. As anticipation builds for Jaafar Jackson’s debut performance, “Michael” promises a cinematic journey through the highs and lows of a global icon’s life.
