Masahiro Sakurai believes that Japanese developers shouldn't "westernize" their games

During the PS3 / Xbox 360 era, many Japanese studios tried to appeal primarily to Western audiences. This strategy did not pay off, and had repercussions on the final quality of the titles in question.
For several years now, Japanese companies have been rethinking their approach, preferring to remain faithful to the heritage of their respective franchises, which has had a very positive effect on the critical and commercial success of their productions.
Masahiro Sakurai, director of Kirby and Super Smash Bros., is precisely against this idea of westernizing games from Japan.
"It’s not necessarily my idea, but the trend in the game industry is that the Japanese should go for what the Japanese like."
"Some time ago, there was certainly a culture of making Americanized products, as certain works were popular in the United States. However, I have the impression that overseas fans of Japanese games are not looking for this kind of thing, but rather for something unique and interesting from Japan."
"In other words, I think the ideal is to create games as you like them, and for the people who can accept them to like them."
