Mary Steenburgen joins husband Ted Danson in A Man on the Inside season 2

Mary Steenburgen is on the case — or perhaps is the case — in A Man on the Inside season 2.

The Academy Award and Golden Globe winner is joining the cast of the Netflix hit comedy for its upcoming sophomore season, Netflix announced Friday. The casting news means Steenburgen will star alongside husband Ted Danson just ahead of their 30th wedding anniversary later this year.

The series, which hails from creator Mike Schur, follows Charles (Danson), a retired man who gets a new lease on life when he answers an ad from a private investigator and becomes a mole in a secret investigation in a nursing home. It’s based on the documentary The Mole Agent, a 2021 Oscar nominee for Best Documentary feature.

The first season saw Charles eventually wrap the case and leave the nursing home to return to his life, but ended with the PI calling him again to seek his help on a mysterious new case. In season 2, Steenburgen will play Mona Margadoff, a former musician who factors heavily in the new case Charles is trying to solve.

Danson previously expressed his desire to do another season of A Man on the Inside in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “I would love to because it’s one of my favorite things that I’ve been in, and it is all of the above — sweet, tender, sad, but just a celebration of life,” he said.

When asked what he’d like to see happen for Charles next, Danson had a few thoughts. “I know that Mike has millions of ideas,” he said. “If we’re so lucky, seeing how it takes place in San Francisco, it’d be nice if some of these characters [from season 1] we could bump into them on the street, because it won’t take place in that retirement home. It’ll be someplace else, but they all live in San Francisco, so it’d be wonderful to bump into them that way.”

Season 1 of A Man on the Inside debuted atop Netflix’s most popular English TV List and remained in the Top 10 for five weeks. It was named one of AFI’s 2024 TV programs of the year and Danson was nominated for a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for his performance.

Steenburgen and Danson have previously starred together a number of times, including in Mr. Mayor, The Good Place, Pontiac Moon, and Gulliver’s Travels.

Mike Schur (Fremulon), Morgan Sackett, David Miner (3 Arts Entertainment), Maite Alberdi and Marcela Santibañez (Micromundo Producciones), Julie Goldman and Christopher Clements (Motto Pictures) executive produce the series. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.

Season 2 is expected to begin production in April.
