*Misa Hylton’s $5 million lawsuit against Mary J. Blige is bringing the fighter out of the “Not Gon Cry” hitmaker. Referencing AllHipHop, Vibe reports Blige’s legal team recently filed a motion seeking to have the lawsuit thrown out.
In her eyes, Hylton’s case is “utterly meritless” and an attempt to stir up drama for publicity.
Filed in April by Hylton, her company M.I.S.A. Management, and rapper Vado, the lawsuit claims Blige intentionally interfered with Hylton’s business relationship with Vado, who signed a recording contract with Blige’s Beautiful Life Productions in October 2023.
According to the suit, the hip-hop soul queen allegedly encouraged Vado to sever ties with Hylton and instead work with her head of security instead. Hylton claims that the security head is also Blige’s boyfriend. The suit goes on to accuse Blige of shelving Vado’s completed album until he agrees to drop M.I.S.A. Management. The company reportedly stood to earn 20% of Vado’s income from album sales, live performances, and other ventures, Vibe noted.
Soon after headlines generated from Hylton’s lawsuit, Blige put out what many fans took to be looked to be a response.
“If people don’t reciprocate your love, time, and energy they are not good investments. Get rid of them asap and take care of you,” she wrote. “Love You!”
Responding to the legal drama, Blige’s attorney, Sarah M. Matz, called out what she feels are false accusations generated to produce a win in court with a “favorable” conclusion for Hylton.
“Plaintiffs and their counsel appear to enjoy fabricating accusations that will be discussed in the press and on social media for the purposes of harassing Defendants and trying to coerce a favorable settlement,” Matz stated
Detailing the motion from Blige’s legal team, the Vibe mentioned the group’s argument that M.I.S.A. Management lacks legal standing in the case. “It is stunning that Plaintiffs and their counsel attempt to assert claims on behalf of this non-existent entity,” Matz said.
Hylton and Vado’s claims were also challenged in the motion, with the legal paperwork going at the legitimacy of the pair’s claims, highlighting that Hylton is not a party to Vado’s contract with Beautiful Life Productions and, as a result, has no grounds to sue.
“Vado’s claims fare no better. Asserting a breach of contract claim against Blige individually is by itself sanctionable,” continued Matz.
“Blige is not a party to Vado’s recording agreement nor has any other basis been pled against Blige, making it clear she was included solely for purposes of harassment,” Matz continued.
In addition to dismissing the claims with prejudice to prevent Hylton and Vado from refiling the accusations, Blige is seeking damages and full reimbursement of all legal fees associated with defending against the suit.
At this time, the court has not yet ruled on Blige’s motion.
