*Mariah Carey may be the queen of Christmas, but birthdays are forever exiled from her royal celebration list.
During an appearance last month on the U.K. radio station Capital FM, the “Vision of Love” singer reminded co-hosts Sian Welby, Jordan North and Chris Stark of her well-known stance against recognizing the day she was born. During her interview, the co-hosts each asked Carey a series of questions about what she does or does not support — including acknowledging time.
“Is it true you don’t acknowledge the passing of time?” North asked
“That is true,” Carey candidly confirmed.
Welby chimed in, asking Carey what she meant by her answer to which she said, “I just don’t believe in it.”
Still confused over Carey’s answer, Stark tried his luck with the vocalist, asking if she was referring to time zones.
“No, just time,” Carey added.
Welby then said, “So no clocks? Just not into that?” Welby said.
“Yeah. No, just let it go,” Carey nonchalantly replied.
Not wanting to just let it go, Welby brought it all home with the big question,
“Do you celebrate your birthday?”
From there, Carey drew a line recognizing the occasion she celebrates versus the one she could do without.
“I don’t have a birthday, no,” said the “Make It Happen” entertainer.
“Anniversaries, yes.”
Despite Carey’s repeated responses to the same questions, a still-puzzled Stark kept seeking clarification.
“But if we were to meet up later, how would we know when?” Coming in to save the day, North went to bat for Carey, declaring,” “It’s on Mariah’s time.”
“Yeah, I would have someone call you and figure it out,” Carey proposed.
The back and forth with the Capital FM hosts and Carey is the latest in a string of situations related to how she feels about her birthday. People cited a 2014 interview the entertainer did with Out Magazine, which found her declaring, “I’m eternally 12 years old.” Fast forward to 2019 and Carey has rebuked years in years prior as well as put levels to annual celebrations, with anniversaries jokingly superior over March 27, the day she arrived on Planet Earth.
