Man shot dead after confronting police with knife in Footscray, Melbourne’s west

A knife-wielding man has been shot dead by police in Melbourne’s west.
Police were called to Albert St in Footscray outside the plaza about 9pm on Thursday following reports of a man armed with a knife.

When instructed to drop the weapon, the man instead charged at police with the knife, prompting them to fire.
He was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.
The man is yet to be formally identified.
“Homicide Squad detectives will now investigate the matter with oversight from Professional Standards Command, as is standard procedure for a fatal police shooting,” police said.
