Linday Lohan on effect of childhood fame on mental health
Lindsay Lohan is opening up about what it was like growing up as a child star in the ’90s.
The actress, now 39, began her career at age 10, with her role in 1998’s The Parent Trap catapulting her to fame.
Since then she grew up with cameras flashing in her face and her life spashed across the tabloids.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, she said, ”I don’t ever want my family to experience being chased by the paparazzi the way I was.
“They were terrifying moments I had in my life – I have PTSD to the extreme from those things. The most invasive situations. Really scary. And I pray stuff like that never comes back. It’s not safe. It’s not fair,” Lohan said.
She believes the age of social media is allowing young stars to take control of their personal narratives, sharing their lives in their own terms.

“I feel that [the paparazzi’s invasion of personal privacy] doesn’t happen as badly now as it did,” she remarked, “It was way worse when I was younger, but now, because of social media, people can tell their own story in the way that you want it to be told. It has reclaimed the ownership of your life.”
“We didn’t have that,” she said, “But what I have learned over time is how to separate my private life and public life, and that was difficult for me because nobody ever teaches you how to do that.”
The actress rose to fame in her teen years with hits like Mean Girls, Freaky Friday, Herbie: Fully Loaded, and a promising singing career.

However, she then experienced a dip in popularity with a series of failed projects that coincided with a number of legal issues, eventually working her way back with a focus on television projects.
In 2021 she returned to film with a Christmas film, Falling for Christmas and romantic comedy Irish Wish, before announcing that she will be returning to her role as Anna Coleman in the sequel to Freaky Friday, Freakier Friday, which will be released in theatres soon.
In 2014 she moved to Dubai and has been living there ever since. She married her husband, Bader Shammas in 2022 and has since welcomed a son, Luai, aged two.

In a new interview, Lohan revealed she chooses to live in the United Arab Emirates city because it allows her to escape the one thing that’s chased her for her entire life.
“There’s no worry of, ’I can’t go eat at this place because someone’s going to take a picture of my son’ and I feel very safe,” she said in an appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark.
When asked if there is any paparazzi in Dubai, Lohan explained, “No, it’s not legal”.
“You can’t even take a picture of someone else if you’re at a restaurant, you have to ask the person which is a big difference from here.”
