Level One is a new awareness-raising puzzler about diabetes that provides quite the challenge

When it comes to raising awareness, it seems that many charities still underestimate the reach of gaming. While we’ve seen scattered initiatives and collaborations between charities and top releases it’s still relatively uncommon. But when it does happen it can be extremely intriguing, as is the case with the upcoming colourful, time-crunching puzzler Level One.

The inspiration behind Level One came from developer Sam Glassenberg and his wife’s experience with caring for their daughter JoJo after her diagnosis of type-one diabetes. Glassenberg recalls the extreme balancing act and constant injections of insulin needed, as well as constantly tracking what his daughter ate and drank.

Fittingly then, despite the colourful graphics Level One is meant to be quite the challenging release. The gameplay is extremely demanding, and even a momentary lapse of attention can lead to a game over. It’s easy then to see what metaphor is being communicated here.

Raising awareness

Level One’s launch is also supported by diabetes awareness charity Breakthrough T1D Play which was founded by parents in the gaming industry who care for children with type-one diabetes. Considering over nine million people live with a diagnosis, and 500,000 new ones are made each week, it’s unsurprising that this is an important mission.

I expect that Level One is sure to help with awareness, and given the hunger of mobile gamers for the hardcore difficulty it may be that this colourful puzzler manages to entertain as well as inform. It’s set to release on March 27th for iOS and Android, so keep an eye out for when the store pages go live and give it a try!
