Kirk Franklin Addresses ‘Hoochie Daddy Shorts’ Backlash and Twerking Controversy | VIDEO

*Gospel music icon Kirk Franklin recently addressed criticism over a viral video from his 2024 Jamaica performance, where his casual attire sparked debate among fans.
Appearing on Angie Martinez’s IRL podcast, the 22-time Grammy winner clarified misconceptions about his outfit, which some labeled “booty shorts” or “hoochie daddy shorts.”
“I had some shorts on and a tank top, and I got ridiculed,” Franklin told Martinez, insisting, “It was just a regular look that I had on. I had some Travis Scotts on and I was doing a concert.”
The controversy extended beyond his wardrobe when another clip showed Franklin “twerking” on gospel singer Jacky Clark Chisholm, prompting mixed reactions from churchgoers. Franklin has since apologized for both incidents, but the public’s focus on these moments has worn on him.

“It became fatiguing,” he said, reflecting on social media’s role in amplifying criticism. He described the platform as a double-edged sword, noting, “It’s the necessary capital E word [evil] that you know we all are trying to maneuver with because it does a lot of good.”
Franklin added that some individuals “weaponizing Christianity” misuse social media, stating, “It’s not social media that’s evil, it’s the individuals [whose] hearts are not pure and healed and whole and surrendered that use that as a tool of evil.”
The controversy resurfaced humorously at the 2025 BET Awards, where host Kevin Hart teased Franklin during his Ultimate Icon Award acceptance, joking, “He be trying to blame it on the Lord. The Lord didn’t ask for that,” referencing the twerking incident.
