Kevin McHale shares his only complaint about the ‘Glee’ series finale

Glee star Kevin McHale says one thing was missing from the series finale: a Brittany and Santana duet.

On their podcast And That’s What You REALLY Missed, McHale and costar Jenna Ushkowitz — who played Artie and Tina, respectively — discussed the show’s final episode.

While they said that the musical numbers included in the finale were perfectly chosen, McHale felt like a “Brittana” song was missing.

“I wish we got a moment for them,” McHale said.

On the Glee series finale, titled “Dreams Come True,” past and present members of the New Directions glee club come together to celebrate their McKinley High becoming a performing arts school. The show ends with the students singing “I Lived” by OneRepublic as an ensemble.

Throughout the duration of the series, Santana (Naya Rivera) and Brittany (Heather Morris) find their friendship blossoming into a fan-favorite romance. The pair marry each other in a double wedding alongside Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Blaine (Darren Criss) in episode 8 of the final season, but are relatively absent for the rest of the show.

They return for Glee‘s final number, which Ushkowitz said was emotional to watch. The podcast cohosts agreed that seeing Brittana make an appearance made them want to hear a song from the couple.

However, Ushkowitz admitted that it wouldn’t have made sense to give them a duet without a strong Brittana storyline in the finale.

“This episode was, like, so perfectly woven with storylines,” Ushkowitz said. “[The songs] wove into the storyline. It didn’t feel like, ‘Oh, let’s just throw it in there because we love these characters.’ It was just very meticulous.”

McHale acknowledged that a duet between Brittany and Santana may have felt like “fan service,” rather than an intentional part of the episode.

Glee ran for six seasons from 2009 to 2015. Rivera, who played Santana on the show, died at 33 after accidentally drowning in 2020.
