Kelly Clarkson gathered inspiration for her new single from the Arconia.
The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter debuted the new track, “Where Have You Been,” one day early before Friday’s global release on her SiriusXM channel The Kelly Clarkson Connection and shared its unlikely inspiration in her intro: the love story between Oliver Putman (played by Martin Short) and Loretta Dunkin (Meryl Streep) in Hulu’s hit whodunnit Only Murders in the Building.
“I’ve rarely done something like this but I was watching Only Murders in the Building — it’s Martin Short’s face. He says to Meryl Streep’s character in the show, ‘Where have you been?'” Clarkson shared. “He’s like in awe and I was like, ‘Has there been a— has anyone written a song?’ Because the song is happy. It’s like you found something that you thought was almost basically a unicorn and did not exist.”
The love birds, played by rumored real-life couple Short and Streep, got married in the courtyard of the Arconia in the recent season 4 finale of the comedic murder mystery. Season 5 of the series, also starring Steve Martin and Selena Gomez, officially began production in March.

Clarkson is a well documented fan of the show, previously expressing a desire to cameo on it while answering fan questions earlier this year for her eponymous daytime talk show. She also collaborated with one of its stars for her 10th studio album, 2023’s Chemistry: Martin, a noted banjo player, plays the instrument in the track “I Hate Love.”
The lyrics even reference Martin’s 2009 Nancy Meyers rom-com It’s Complicated, which also starred Streep: “I hate love / And The Notebook lied / It’s Complicated is more like what happens / So you can keep Gosling and I’ll take Steve Martin.”

Clarkson previously told Billboard that Martin was enthusiastic about the pitch from the start. “I generally don’t ask because I get very nervous about bothering people. But literally, within hours, I got an answer: ‘Oh my God, he’d love to, when are you recording it?’” she recalled.
“Where Have You Been” debuts globally on May 2.
