Janice LeAnn Brown & Taylor Cora on Bringing #BlackGirlMagic to Disney’s ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ | EUR Video Exclusive

*Disney’s “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place” is casting a powerful new spell on audiences, and at the heart of its magic are two rising stars: Janice LeAnn Brown and Taylor Cora.
As the talented young sorceress Billie (Janice) and her fearless best friend Winter (Taylor), these actresses are breathing fresh life into the Wizards universe—while also making history. The stars are reimagining Disney Channel’s iconic Wizards world with a fresh and captivating perspective. The show, which premiered last fall, broke Disney+ streaming records, becoming Disney Channel’s most-watched series premiere ever on the platform, per the network’s news release. The series returned with a slate of new episodes on February 28.
At just 14 years old, Janice and Taylor aren’t just leading the show—they’re also redefining what it means to see young Black girls in a world of magic. Their undeniable chemistry, vibrant performances, and inspiring presence are giving fans a whole new reason to believe in the power of representation. The dynamic duo know just how impactful their roles can be for young Black girls watching at home.
“I hope that maybe they can be inspired and know that really anything is possible,” Janice shared. “Yeah, I’m not going to sugarcoat it—it’s hard. It is definitely hard. But I just hope they get inspired enough to fight for whatever their dreams may be.”
Taylor echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of staying true to oneself.
“I hope they take away that they can be anything. Just never change, because there are a lot of Black girls out there with big personalities, and there’s always someone trying to dim their light. I hope they never change and know they can be anything they want to be. Right on, right on,” she said.
“Wizards Beyond Waverly Place” follows an adult Justin Russo (David Henrie), who has chosen to lead a normal, mortal life with his family, Giada, Roman, and Milo. When Justin’s sister Alex brings Billie to his home seeking help, Justin realizes he must dust off his magical skills to mentor the wizard-in-training while also juggling his everyday responsibilities — and safeguarding the future of the Wizard World. The series stars Alkaio Thiele (as Roman Russo), Max Matenko (as Milo Russo), and Mimi Gianopulos (as Giada Russo). Selena Gomez (as Alex Russo) guest stars and also serves as an executive producer on the show.
Learning From Disney Legends
Being part of the Wizards universe means working alongside Disney icons like David Henrie and Selena Gomez. And for Janice and Taylor, the experience has been invaluable.
“I remember David Henrie telling us about his experiences as a teenager on a Disney show,” Taylor recalled. “He said he was afraid to ask for help because he didn’t want to seem like he didn’t know what he was doing. But at the end of the day, you have to ask for help so that you do know what you’re doing.”
Bringing Personal Experience to Their Characters
For Janice, playing Billie has been more than just a role—it’s been deeply personal.
“I think I bring a lot to her character,” she reflected. “The whole thing about finding her ‘found family’ really resonates with me because I was adopted by my grandparents. For the longest time, I felt kind of out of place, like I was a burden to them. Even though they love me as their own, I still carried that feeling, even from a young age. I think that’s something Billie experiences with the Russos. She sometimes feels like a burden to them because she brings so much chaos into their lives, and she doesn’t want that. I relate to her in that way.”

What’s Next for Billie & Winter?
With new episodes on the horizon, fans can expect major developments in Billie and Winter’s friendship—along with plenty of unexpected twists.
“I think we’re really going to explore Billie and Winter’s friendship,” Taylor teased. “There will be some wonderful moments and maybe some not-so-great moments. But in the end, they’re going to grow closer as friends and as sisters.”
Janice hinted at even bigger surprises, saying, “All I can say is your jaw may be on the floor. It’s going to be an emotional rollercoaster, truly. Miss Selena [Gomez] will be returning as the iconic Alex Russo. You’ll get to experience that Justin and Alex dynamic again. And there are some surprises I can’t spoil yet, but just stay tuned. I’m excited for fans to see the finale—there’s a big plot twist. Not even just one! Maybe two… kind of three. Maybe three.”
One thing is certain—fans are in for a magical ride.
