Iran imposed a trading curfew on crypto exchanges after a pro-Israel hacking group stole over $90 million in digital assets from Nobitex, then burned the loot and revealed the exchange’s source code.

The curfew, imposed by Iran’s central bank, limits crypto trading to between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. local time, blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis said in a June 18 blog post.

The move appeared to be a response to fears of further cyberattacks amid the war between Israel and Iran, said Chainalysis head of national security Andrew Fierman.

“Incidents are easier to triage if they’re not happening in the middle of the night,” he said.

Nobitex Hack

Pro-Israel Hacker Group Takes Credit For Nobitex Hack, Burns All Of The Stolen Crypto

Hacking group Gonjeshke Darande, or Predatory Sparrow, took credit for the hack on X, and said the exchange was targeted because it is often used as a “sanctions violation tool.”

Several cybersecurity firms noted that the hack was not performed for a profit because all of the assets that were drained from the platform were sent to burn addresses with no known private keys. Chainalysis also said that the Nobitex hack fits a pattern of cyberattacks coinciding with spikes in tensions between Iran and Israel.

However, the incident does seem to be politically motivated. Several of those burner wallets included slurs against Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Nobitex Hackers Deliver On Threat To Reveal Nobitex Source Code

After transferring the stolen Nobitex funds to burner wallets, the group threatened to put the remaining assets on the exchange at risk and expose vital technical details about the platform’s infrastructure.

Earlier today, the group delivered on their promise and shared what they claim to be Nobitex’s full source code as well as details about the platform’s servers.

By exposing those technical details, the pro-Israel hacker group has given other cyber criminals the information they need to potentially launch their own attack on the exchange.
