‘Invincible’ season 5 renewal confirmed as Matthew Rhys joins season 4

Invincible is living up to its name as an unstoppable show.

The R-rated animated series, based on Robert Kirkman’s action-packed comic book, has officially been renewed for season 5 — well before season 4 is set to premiere on Amazon’s Prime Video in 2026. And according to a new announcement video, which shows cast members celebrating in a voiceover booth, they’ve already finished recording it.

“Season f—ing 5! You know what that’s called? A success!” Walton Goggins, who voices the character Cecil Stedman, says in the video.

Additional news revolves around Matthew Rhys. The actor from FX’s The Americans and HBO’s Perry Mason will join the Invincible cast in season 4, though details about his character are scarce. Rhys also appears in Thursday’s renewal video, which includes leads Steven Yeun (Mark Grayson), Gillian Jacobs (Atom Eve), Sandra Oh (Debbie Grayson), J.K. Simmons (Omni-Man), and more.

Earlier this week, Yeun received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance for the show, specifically for his work on season 3’s seventh episode, “What Have I Done?” The thrilling installment saw the actor voice 18 different alternate-reality variants of the series’ lead character.

“We were spitballing in the booth a lot. They would tell me what the character was like, and I would just try some things out and they would give me feedback,” Yeun told Entertainment Weekly in March. “For me, it was most about understanding the specific psyche of the character that helped me.”

“What Have I Done?” — as well as the season 3 finale episode, “I Thought You’d Never Shut Up” — received a lot of attention from fans for adapting the event comic book arc The Invincible War and bringing fan-favorite villain Conquest (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) into the fray.

Amazon reported that Invincible season 3 became Prime Video’s most-watched season of animated television of all time and the biggest returning season of all time across all of Prime Video’s adult animation originals.

When teasing season 4 earlier this year, Kirkman, a co-showrunner and executive producer, told EW, “We’re going to try to continue to escalate the stakes and the scope.”

He also more than hinted at Morgan reprising his role as Conquest. “I don’t think Cecil would’ve gone to all the trouble of containing Conquest the way he did if Conquest was dead,” Kirkman said. “So I think it’s safe to say that Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Conquest will return in some capacity.”
