Even with Jackie Chan on his side, the Karate Kid stood no chance against the combined powers of Stitch and Tom Cruise.
After breaking several box office records with their massive Memorial Day weekend debuts, both Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning are still going strong.
Disney’s live-action remake of their 2002 animated hit picked up another $63 million at the domestic box office, bringing its domestic tally to $280 million, per Comscore. Globally, the film is now at a whopping $610.8 million after just two weeks in theaters.
Riding the wave of box office success puts Lilo & Stitch on the path to possibly surpass the year’s biggest winner so far, A Minecraft Movie ($947 million). Following a fugitive alien who befriends a lonely Hawaiian girl, Lilo & Stitch not only taps into millennial nostalgia, but has welcomed a new generation into the franchise thanks to its adorable mascot.

Coming in third is another familiar title, Karate Kid: Legends, the sixth film in the martial arts action franchise. Starring Chan, Ben Wang, Ming-Na Wen, Ralph Macchio, and Joshua Jackson, the sequel picks up three years after the conclusion of the popular TV spinoff Cobra Kai and follows a new student (Wang) as he trains for a karate tournament under Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Han. The film debuted to $21 million domestically, for a global total of $47 million.
As theaters had no shortage of offerings this weekend, horror-inclined moviegoers also got their fill: For those seeking scares, Final Destination Bloodlines continued to deliver. The film earned another $10 million domestically, bringing the gory sequel to $111 million ($229 million globally).

Featuring the final performance of horror icon Tony Todd, the film marks the sixth entry in the franchise, which began in 2000 with Final Destination. Directed by Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky, the story once again centers an unfortunate soul who has a vision of the future that allows them to escape a horrifying death. But they soon realize that cheating death is no easy feat as one by one, the survivors — and their descendants — fall victim to increasingly grisly deaths.
