A husband uttered a shocking phrase after allegedly confessing to killing his wife and hiding her decomposing body in their home for a month.

Charles Byrd, 49, was arrested without incident on Sunday afternoon following a daylong manhunt for him after a relative reported he ‘may have done something’ to his wife, Angela Byrd, 44, said Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar.

Deputies entered the Byrds’ home on the 22100 block of Pleasanton Road in Bexar County on Saturday and immediately smelled an odor of decomposition, said Salazar.

Angela’s corpse was discovered wrapped in plastic inside.

‘He detailed to the investigator that he had never been arrested before, that he had never committed a crime before, and then blurted out the comment to our investigator, “You know, go big or go home,”‘ Salazar during a press conference.

The sheriff added: ‘That was pretty shocking to me.’

Charles reportedly made a similar confession as he was being taken into custody in a vacant home roughly a mile from the one he shared with his wife.

He told a KSAT reporter that he was having a ‘mental break’.

‘I’m so sorry,’ he said.

‘I loved my wife.’

Charles also insisted that his crime was not reflective of who he is, and apologized to his kids.

The body recovered from the couple’s home is believed to belong to Angela but has yet to be identified by a medical examiner’s office. The cause of death has not been determined.

Charles also told investigators that he had a violent encounter with Angela on June 16.

He has been charged with tampering with evidence with intent to impair a human corpse. He may face a murder charge based on the medical examiner’s findings.

Charles is being held at Bexar County Jail and is due to have a mental health evaluation.

He was busted more than four years after a Missouri husband allegedly shot his wife and her parents to death after his in-laws refused to leave, and then fired another round at them to ensure they weren’t alive.
