Geffen Playhouse Welcomes World Premiere of Furlough’s Paradise

*”Furlough’s Paradise” has taken the stage at the Geffen Playhouse. The drama by A.K. Payne features Kacie Rogers and DeWanda Wise. It’s a cousin’s love story that peels away years of misunderstandings and misconceptions between the two young women. One is on a weekend furlough and the other is a gracious host. Both are assessing a lost loved one, but grief takes a second seat to the predictable unresolved family issues that often arise after funerals.

*Director Tinashe Kajese-Bolden takes every imaginative opportunity to lift the text of Furlough’s Paradise into orbit. Her direction shifts a linear narrative into a presentation of dramatic tension where the characters’ subconscious minds speak through choreographed body language, releasing what the soul could not put into words.
Furlough’s Paradise is ultimately about love in all of its frustrated misconceptions and familial entanglements. In a world of ironic extremes, this play gives evidence of the two most important dichotomies. Life and love are four letter words.

This production is made possible, in part, by support from Cast Iron Entertainment and the National Endowment for the Arts. Production Sponsor is UCLA Health. Geffen Playhouse’s Theater as a Lens for Justice initiative provides access to this production and supplementary programs for populations impacted by incarceration and is supported, in part, by Jayne Baron Sherman.
Audience Engagement initiatives for Furlough’s Paradise are supported by The Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation. Gil Cates, Jr. is Executive Director and CEO of Geffen Playhouse, and Tarell Alvin McCraney is Artistic Director.

The world premiere of Furlough’s Paradise runs through May 18th 2025 at the Geffen Playhouse. For tickets and more information visit: GeffenPlayhouse.org.
