Fumito Ueda thinks games no longer need to introduce new gameplay mechanics

Fumito Ueda is a respected director in the gaming industry known for his work on ICO, Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian. He is currently hard at work on Project Robot.
The Japanese creator recently gave an interview with Keita Takahashi, director of the Katamari games. To promote his next title, To a T, Takahashi explained the concept to Ueda. He was quite honest, revealing that his new production won’t feature any mechanics never before seen in video games.
Fumito Ueda then made quite a statement. "I don’t think we’re in an era where we have to come up with new concepts and new game mechanics every time ", said the man.
For him, we’re no longer in the "era of mechanics" during which games innovated almost every time. Nowadays, AAA and even smaller titles are content to refine formulas that already work.
