Five soldiers were shot Wednesday at a Georgia Army base.

Fort Stewart, located about an hour outside of Savannah, was on lockdown for about an hour due to an “active shooter” on Wednesday morning, officials said. The shooter was reported in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area, which is still on lockdown as of 12:30 p.m. local time.

There is no active threat to the community, officials said.

The five soldiers have been moved to Winn Army Community Hospital for further treatment. The suspected shooter was apprehended about 30 minutes after the base first went into lockdown.

Governor Brian Kemp is monitoring the situation, he said on X.

“As we remain in close contact with law enforcement on the ground, Marty, the girls, and I are saddened by today’s tragedy at Ft. Stewart,” Kemp said. “We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same.”

The FBI is also coordinating with the Army Criminal Investigation Division to assist with the investigation.

Fort Stewart is the largest Army base east of the Mississippi River. It’s home to thousands of soldiers and their families.
