Fort Stewart shooting updates: Five ‘casualties’ reported at Georgia army base on lockdown for ‘active shooter’

The main areas of Fort Stewart are no longer on lockdown, officials said Wednesday afternoon.

However, the area targeted by the shooter is still on lockdown.

“The installation was locked down at 11:04 a.m. and Fort Stewart lifted the lockdown of the main cantonment area at 12:10 p.m,” officials said. “2nd ABCT complex is still locked down.”

President Donald Trump has been briefed on the Fort Stewart shooting, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said.

The White House is monitoring the situation, she added.

Five soldiers were shot today at Fort Stewart, officials announced Wednesday afternoon.

“All Soldiers were treated on-site and moved to Winn Army Community Hospital for further treatment,” officials said. “There is no active threat to the community.”

The shooter was apprehended at 11:35 a.m. local time.

“The installation was locked down at 11:04 a.m. and Fort Stewart lifted the lockdown of the main cantonment area at 12:10 p.m,” officials said. “2nd ABCT complex is still locked down.”

Fort Stewart schools are no longer under a “lock out/secure status,” according to Community Superintendent Brian Perry.

“All schools, Diamond, Kessler, and Murray are now in normal operations,” he said. “School dismissal will be at normal time.”

The nearby Wright and Evans Army Airfield is also on lockdown, according to a statement from Fort Stewart officials.

“Lockdown your facility immediately, stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors,” officials said. “Keep telephone lines open and report accountability to your leadership.”

The FBI’s office in Savannah, Georgia is coordinating with the Army Criminal Investigation Division to provide assistance.

Georgia Representative Buddy Carter has issued a statement on the shooting.

“I am monitoring the situation at Fort Stewart,” Carter said. “Please join me in prayers for the casualties, their families, and the brave law enforcement officers working to protect our community.”

Nearby schools in Liberty County, Georgia are on a soft lockdown in response to the active shooter at Fort Stewart.

The schools include Button Gwinnett Elementary, Joseph Martin Elementary and Snelson Golden Middle School.

Students in the Appling County School System are also on a level one lockdown, according to their website.

Fort Stewart, an army base an hour outside of Savannah, Georgia, is now on lockdown due to an active shooter.

“The installation was locked down at 11:04 a.m. and law enforcement is on the scene at the time,” officials said. “Casualties have been reported and the situation is ongoing.”
