Scoop Troops, do you copy? Major update from the Upside Down: Finn Wolfhard shared some possible details about the mysterious Stranger Things spinoff series.
The actor, who plays Mike Wheeler on the Netflix hit previously divulged that he unwittingly predicted the plot of the spinoff, shocking co-creators Ross and Matt Duffer. Wolfhard is the only person who has correctly guessed the plot, and in a recent conversation with Variety, spilled details on the prediction and compared the new series to David Lynch’s Twin Peaks.
“Sort of an anthology and different tones but similar universe or same universe,” Wolfhard elaborated. “I think set in different places and all tied together through this mythology of the Upside Down. Don’t even talk about Hawkins. Don’t have any mention of our characters. They were toying around with ideas in case Netflix wanted them. I’m sure they do, and I’m sure it will happen, but there’s nothing official.”

He’s even got some ideas of his own. “I think the coolest way, the way that I would do it, there has to be labs everywhere,” Wolfhard added. “If there was one in Hawkins, there’s one in Russia. Where else could they be?”
Ross Duffer told the outlet that no one else — “not Netflix, not any of the producers, not any of the directors, not any of the actors” — was able to figure out the plot. Yet “Finn figured out, which is pretty remarkable,” he added. “We’ve mind-melded with this kid a bit.”
The Duffers announced the spin-off in 2022, revealing in a podcast interview that it would be “1000 percent different” from the original series. Matt Duffer notably disputed rumors that it would involve existing characters like Eleven or Steve, or another of Dr. Martin Brenner’s child test subjects for that matter. “That’s not interesting to me because we’ve done all that,” he said. “We’ve spent I don’t know how many hours exploring all of that. So it’s very different. The most important connective tissue, I would say, is the storytelling sensibility of it.”

Wolfhard first recalled shocking the Duffers with his intuition during an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2023. “I was like, ‘If you guys are actually going to do a spinoff, it should be this,” he recalled. “And then I said it and the Duffers looked at each other and looked at me and they were like, ‘Could we talk to you for a second?’ And then they pulled me off and they were like, ‘That is the idea. Who told you?’”
He continued, “I was like, ‘No one,’ and they were like, ‘What do you mean? You just came up with it?’ And I was like, ‘I just thought that that would be a cool way to expand.’ It was really funny and they were like ‘Okay, well… don’t tell anyone.’”
The first four episodes of the fifth and final season of Stranger Things premiere Nov. 26.
