The Fan Did What?!
The incident occurred during the bottom of the seventh inning, when Marte was seen breaking down on the field as his manager, Torey Lovullo, rushed over to console him. The fan’s hateful remark targeted Marte’s mother, Elpidia Valdez. She died in a car accident in the Dominican Republic in 2017. Lovullo and bench coach Jeff Banister demanded the fan’s immediate removal, which the White Sox confirmed. The team announced an indefinite ban for the offender. Major League Baseball also stepped in, extending the ban to all stadiums nationwide, emphasizing that there’s no room in baseball for offensive language or personal attacks.

The MLB Family Speaks Out
White Sox manager Will Venable voiced his disappointment in the incident, insisting such behavior does not represent the team’s fan base. He revealed:
“No player should ever have to be subjected to that kind of stuff from fans,” Venable said. “That’s not reflective of anything that I’ve seen from these White Sox fans. They’ve been extremely positive and extremely supportive, and for Ketel to have to experience that is extremely disappointing. I sent my apologies over to them last night, and I know a number of us have apologized, again, for what is not representative of how our fans behave, and something that no player should be subjected to.”
Fans reportedly showed their support for Marte during the three-game series finale, cheering loudly and holding signs as a united front against the hateful outburst. The stadium also displayed a message on the big screen declaring, “Baseball is Family. The White Sox Community supports Ketel Marte,” reminding everyone that respect and compassion belong in the game.
