*Dammit. Here we go AGAIN. 🙁 The family of 11-year-old Caliyah James, an African American student at Frank E. Woodruff Elementary School in Bellflower, California (adjacent to Los Angeles), has raised serious concerns about ongoing racial bullying.

They report that Caliyah has been subjected to racial slurs, including being called the N-word and “monkey,” and was recently told to “go back to Africa” by non-African American students.

Despite multiple complaints to school staff and Principal Dr. Kieu Trang Nguyen, the family alleges that no effective action has been taken to address the harassment.

“Principal Nguyen, has refused to meet personally with our family to help solve the racial hate crimes targeting African American children at her school. We’re calling for her Immediate resignation,” said Tamelia Price Millsap grandmother of Caliyah

They are now calling for Principal Nguyen’s immediate resignation, citing her refusal to meet with them to resolve the issue.

Community Leaders Rally Behind Caliyah’s Family

The family’s call for action has garnered support from several community organizations and leaders. Rev. Jonathan Moseley, Western Regional Director of the Los Angeles National Action Network, and Cheryl Branch, CEO of Los Angeles Metropolitan Churches, have both expressed solidarity with the family.

Najee Ali, Senior Organizer for Los Angeles Metropolitan Churches, emphasized the broader issue of racial bullying in Southern California schools.

“African American students and staff members continue to face racial slurs, hate, violence, and intolerance by non-African American students. We support the family’s calls for justice for Caliyah and all African American students impacted by racial hate,” he stated.
