Ellen Pompeo adopts Natalia Grace in ‘Good American Family’ trailer

Ellen Pompeo is taking a break from the world of medical procedurals to try her hand at true crime.

But even as she hops genres (and networks), some things never change: in the first trailer for Good American Family, Pompeo offers the audience a direct line into her character’s mind with a dramatic voiceover.

“I’ve always considered myself blessed,” she begins. “I’ve known I was put on this Earth to build a world where all kids can feel safe.”

That idea is reaffirmed for Kristine Barnett (Pompeo) when she gets the call about a little girl ready to be adopted by her and husband, Michael (Mark Duplass). But unbeknownst to them, they’re on the verge of being pulled into a twisty nightmare, based on the true story of Natalia Grace.

Per the logline, Good American Family is “told from multiple points of view, as a means to explore issues of perspective, bias, and trauma” inspired by “the disturbing stories surrounding a Midwestern couple who adopts a girl with a rare form of dwarfism. But as they begin to raise her alongside their three biological children, mystery emerges around her age and background, and they slowly start to suspect she may not be who she says she is.”

The series will dramatize the real-life story of Grace (played by Imogen Faith Reid), whose story originally made headlines in 2013 when the Barnett family abandoned the adoptee in an apartment alone, claiming she was lying about her age and alleging that she tried to kill Kristine. Natalia went on to live with two different families in the years that followed and the Barnetts were charged with neglect of a dependent but the charges were later dismissed.

The story was recently explored across three seasons of the ID docuseries The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, which featured interviews with Natalia and her adoptive families, and concluded in January.

The series will delve into the conflicting accounts presented by Natalia and the Barnetts, as the battle “plays out in the tabloids and the courtroom.” Dulé Hill, Christina Hendricks, Sarayu Blue, and Jenny O’Hara are also set to star.

Good America Family was first announced in 2022, followed by the news that Pompeo would scale back her role on Grey’s Anatomy, ABC’s long-running medical drama. Pompeo stayed on as the show’s primary narrator, but indeed cut back on her onscreen appearances, prompting an emotional sendoff for her iconic character, Meredith Grey. Two years later, with filming wrapped on Good American Family, Pompeo upped her onscreen role for Grey‘s 21st season.

Good America Family premieres on Hulu on March 19, launching with two episodes, followed by weekly releases. Watch the trailer above.
